About IRIS

IRIS — the International Response to Improve Sight is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing blindness and restoring the vision of afflicted individuals in the developing world through education, equipment donation and encouragement of native health-care providers. IRIS strives to be an important resource to the local medical personnel who form the front line in the effort to end global blindness.

IRIS is a Virginia non-stock corporation that has tax exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Donations from the IRIS Board of Directors pay all administrative costs. Therefore, a tax-deductible donation to IRIS is applied entirely to the purchase of equipment for overseas clinics and/or for educational activities supporting and promoting medical missions.

Since it was founded in 2004, IRIS has provided clinics in the West African nation of Cameroon with more than $500,000 worth of medical equipment, surgical instruments, clinic supplies and medications. Here are just a few examples of what IRIS has accomplished thanks to the generosity of its donors.

bullet IRIS provided the Mbingo Eye Clinic with a modern surgical microscope enabling surgeons to perform faster and safer cataract surgery, treating the leading cause of blindness in Africa.
bullet IRIS installed state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment in the Banso Eye Clinic, including a slit lamp biomicroscope and ultrasound machine, making it possible for clinicians to examine more patients and make more accurate diagnoses.
bullet IRIS donated an Oculight Glx Laser to the Acha Bafoussam Eye Hospital. This instrument permits physicians, for the first time in the West Province of Cameroon, to treat diabetic ocular complications, thus saving the vision of hundreds of individuals annually.

See How to Help for information on how you can assist IRIS in its mission. Every dollar that you give goes directly to preventing blindness and restoring the vision of afflicted people in developing countries. The IRIS board pays all administrative costs. Donations are tax deductible.
